MACKAY, Barbara Clair

(nee Miller)

At Princess Gardens on Monday, April 19, 2021 in her 89th year Barbara had a sudden, yet peaceful passing. Barbara was born in Windsor, NS to Wentworth Chauncey and Almina Candice Miller. After graduating from The Victorian School of Nursing (class of 1953) in Halifax, NS she married Harold V. MacKay in 1958. Together they made Peterborough, Ontario their new hometown. Barbara contributed so much to Peterborough's ever evolving health care. She started with The Victorian Order of Nurses, and over the years she became the Director of Home Care at the Peterborough Health Unit until her retirement in 1992. Barbara was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Harold V. MacKay. She was the loving mother of Michael (Diane Evans), Ann Downey (James) and Joan MacKay (Rodney Flynn). Dear grandmother of Victoria, Alexander, Miller and Taylor. Sister of Joan Newcomb and brother of Donald Miller. Barbara (and Harold) maintained strong bonds with extended family from Winnipeg, the Maritimes and the Eastern Seaboard of the USA. She loved her nation wide family and will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Barbara had many interests and passions that included; gardening, dogs, knitting, quilting, cottage life, boating, water sports and curling. Barbara and Harold spent many winters skiing well into their seventies, taking them to Canada's west coast and the USA. She loved bridge and played up until a few years before her recent passing. She will be missed by all who knew her. A true gem. Due to the Provincial mandates for Covid-19 a memorial service will be held at a later date. In memory of Barbara, donations may be made to Peterborough Regional Health Centre.
