Petes to select 13th overall in U18 draft

A day after winning the sixth-overall pick in the 2021 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection the Peterborough Petes learned they will select 13th in the OHL’s under-18 draft. A day after its first draft lottery Wednesday, the OHL set the order for its U18 draft to take place June 9 at noon and the 2021 CHL Import Draft slated for June 30. The OHL Priority Selection is June 4 and 5. The OHL held another lottery Thursday for the U18 draft with the London Knights earning the first-overall pick and the Petes No. 13. The OHL opted to use a lottery system after the 2020-21 season was cancelled due to the pandemic, leaving no standings to base the order of selection upon. Results were determined by a computerized random number generator. The lottery process was overseen by Robert Bayne, partner with the law firm Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP. Established in 2017, the U18 draft is two rounds. Teams that select a goalie have the option of an additional third-round pick. Players eligible to be selected are 2003- or ’04-born U18 AAA players not currently on a CHL protected list who registered within the OHF, HNO or HEO during the 2020-21 season. This year’s selection will be structured in a serpentine arrangement with the order of selection in the second round in inverse order from round one. The draft will be streamed live on the OHL’s YouTube channel with further coverage across league social media platforms and website. The OHL is designated to select third in the CHL Import Draft behind the QMJHL and WHL. The OHL will use the inverse order of their Wednesday lottery for the import draft, meaning the Petes will select 16th among OHL teams, 45th overall, in the import draft. The OHL teams will pick in inverse order in round two if they opt for a second selection.
