Eight COVID deaths in local area

Healthy Planet Arena now offering third-dose boosters through walk-in clinics

Four new hospitalized cases were also reported Tuesday by Peterborough Public Health

The COVID-19 pandemic took a deadly turn Tuesday with five new deaths reported by Peterborough Public Health, along with one in the City of Kawartha Lakes and one in Northumberland County reported, while new hospitalized cases continued to mount.

The five most recent deaths Peterborough Public Health has tracked were a vaccinated woman in her 60s, an unvaccinated man in his 70s, a vaccinated man in his 80s and two women in their 90s who were vaccinated.

The deaths happened over the past several days.

The jurisdiction has now had 46 cumulative COVID-19-related deaths, with 16 this month alone — 11 in vaccinated individuals and five in unvaccinated people.

The City of Kawartha Lakes death involved a resident in their 50s who was fully vaccinated. It’s the 65th COVID-19 related death of the pandemic for the City of Kawartha Lakes. The Northumberland County fatality was a person in their 60s who was also fully vaccinated. It’s the 21st for Northumberland County.

Four new hospitalized cases were also reported Tuesday by Peterborough Public Health.

Peterborough Regional Health Centre had 21 admitted patients with the virus as of Tuesday.

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit also reported three new hospitalized cases, two in Northumberland County and one in the City of Kawartha Lakes.

Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay had seven admitted patients with the virus on Tuesday with six of them having been admitted with COVID-19 as the primary reason for admission.

As of Tuesday, the jurisdiction had 22 hospitalized cases with nine in intensive care units. There were no new outbreaks in either jurisdiction. An outbreak that was declared at an unnamed congregate living facility in Peterborough city on Jan. 9 was lifted on Tuesday.

Peterborough Public Health has 16 ongoing outbreaks while the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit has 24.

More than 750 people get third dose over the past day

There are now 71,354 residents who

have had a third booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine, up from 70,600 on Monday — that’s 57.8 per cent of all residents aged 18 and older, up from 57.2 per cent on Monday, Peterborough Public Health reported.

There are now 121,722 residents who have had at least one dose of vaccine and 114,636 who have had at least two doses.

Among everyone five and older who is eligible, 85.9 per cent have now had at least one dose, 81 per cent have had at least two doses and 50.4 per cent have had three doses.

Walk-in clinics for booster doses

COVID-19 vaccination clinics continue at the Healthy Planet Arena at 911 Monaghan Rd. from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. until Thursday and will resume on Jan. 31 and from Feb. 2 to 4 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The clinic, in the arena’s community hall, is now open to walk-ins not only for first and second doses but also for third booster shots.

Appointments, while not required, can be still be made online through the provincial vaccine booking portal at covid-19.ontario.ca/book-vaccine or by calling 1-833-943-3900.

The Cavan Monaghan Community Centre at 986 County Road 10 in Millbrook will host a clinic on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for everyone 12 and older on a walk-in no-appointment basis.

The Buckhorn Community Centre at 1782 Lakehurst Rd. in Buckhorn will host one on Feb. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Many local pharmacies also offer COVID-19 shots by appointment and some will have earlier available appointments than the mass vaccine clinics.

Some are now also offering the pediatric doses for children five to 11.

The clinics and the pharmacies offer Pfizer doses for people 12 to 29 and Moderna for people 30 and older.

Pediatric doses top the 50 per cent mark

Special COVID-19 pediatric dose vaccination clinics for children five to 11 have resumed at the Healthy Planet Arena at 911 Monaghan Rd. in Peterborough and continue to Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and will continue Jan. 31 to Feb. 4 from 5 to 8 p.m.

They are a walk-in clinics for children five to 11 receiving their first dose and by appointment only for those receiving a second dose.

County pediatric dose clinics, by appointment only, are set for Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Norwood District High School at 44 Elm St. in Norwood and Feb. 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Apsley Public School at 238 Burleigh St. in Apsley.

Many local pharmacies are also offering the pediatric doses.

As of Tuesday, 50.3 per cent of children five to 11 locally had had one dose while 8.9 per cent had already had two doses.

Letter to parents updated by medical officer of health

A letter to local parents from Peterborough Public Health medical officer of health Dr. Thomas Piggott that was issued on Thursday has been updated to indicate that the submitting of rapid antigen test results for students to the health unit’s confidential reporting site is being done on a voluntary basis for parents and caregivers.
