The Adam Scott Lions junior boys volleyball team completed an undefeated season by capturing the COSSA AA championship in Belleville on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lions swept the Bayside Devils, 3-0 (25-6, 25-6, 25-12), in one semifinal while the Crestwood Mustangs beat St. Theresa of Belleville in three straight sets in the other semifinal.

In a rematch of the Kawartha final, Adam Scott beat Crestwood, 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-16), in the COSSA final.

“The reason we were so successful this year is because our team consisted of an amazing group of athletes who were coachable, talented and were always willing to work hard and improve their skills,” said Lions coach Darcy Wight.

“They all had a true love for the sport and it showed at every practice and every game,” the coach added.

“Our players were not only talented but respectful and always played with integrity.”

Football

The Adam Scott Lions won the COSSA AA football title by beating the Bayside Red Devils, 21-14, in Belleville on Thursday.

Charlie McCully scored on a 30yard scamper and Blake Howes caught Derek Jones’s seven-yard pass to put the Lions up 14-7 at halftime.

Bayside tied it in the third quarter but the Lions replied when Logan Collison scored on a four-yard run. James Sullivan kicked three converts.

Lions coach Jeff Allen said the team was motivated to win in coach Ted Lacarte’s final game before retiring.

“It wasn’t a perfect season but it was a dream season for us,” Allen said. “We battled through a lot of adversity. COSSA has been a goal since Week 1 and it’s awesome to see the trophy coming home. It was also very special because it was our offensive co-ordinator Ted Lacarte’s last game. Our deep down drive and focus was for him.”

The Holy Cross Hurricanes didn’t fare as well in the COSSA AAA final.

After beating Adam Scott in the Kawartha final to improve to 7-0, the Hurricanes gave up two early touchdowns and didn’t recover, losing 38-0 to the Centennial Chargers.

The Chargers’ first down of the game was a 50-yard passing play for a touchdown marking the first major surrendered by the Hurricanes’ starting defensive unit all season.

Centennial’s first three scores were all on 50-yard plays including off of a Holy Cross fumble in the second quarter. The Hurricanes offence never got untracked.

“Credit to Centennial,” said Hurricanes coach Chris Paige. “They came out guns blazing and ready to roll.”

It was the reverse of last year when Holy Cross put a similar thumping on Centennial. Paige said the message to players was to not let the loss define them moving forward.

“Keep pushing forward in all of your seasons, not just football, and coach (Geoff) McKinley made a great point. He said he wouldn’t trade one gold medal for any of our players. We’re damn proud of them. It’s a group we’ve loved to coach all year,” he said.

Boys hockey

The Crestwood Mustangs kicked off the 2022-23 Kawartha high school boys hockey season with a 7-1 win over the Lindsay Collegiate Spartans on Monday.

Terry Vokey led the Mustangs with two goals and an assist while Haiden Woodward scored a pair and Dylan Tysick, Zakk Rose and Cormac Clowater had a goal and an assist each.

Zac Leeson had two assists with singles going to Cole Brady, Carson Nottingham, Ryan Chamberlain and Max Simon.

Rhys Walden replied for LCVI. On Tuesday, Cobourg’s St. Mary Thunder edged Lindsay’s I.E. Weldon Wildcats, 2-1. Scoring details were unavailable.

The Fenelon Falls Falcons and Norwood District Knights have returned to the league this season, making for a 12-team competition. Each team will play each other once during the regular season.

Other teams include the Adam Scott Lions, Campbellford District Flames, Cobourg Collegiate Wolves, Holy Cross Hurricanes, St. Peter Saints and Thomas A. Stewart Griffins.
