Emma Wright scores in historic water polo win

It might’ve taken 6,188 days, but Canada’s women’s water polo team — featuring sisters Emma and Claire Wright from Lindsay — is back on the winning side at the Olympics after winning their first game since 2004, 21-4 over South Africa on Wednesday in Tokyo, Japan.

Emma Wright had a goal. Clara Vulpisi made her first appearance of the Olympic Games, making eight stops in taking over in net from Claire Wright, who minded the net in earlier losses to Spain and Australia.

It was Team Canada’s first women’s Olympic water polo tournament since Athens 2004. The team qualified for Tokyo 2020 with a silver medal performance at the Lima 2019 Pan Am Games.

Canada recorded 16 steals.

The women now sports a record of 1-2 at the tournament and will take on the Netherlands next on Sunday.

The quarterfinals start Tuesday.
